Plans for the rebuilding of the Tustin Estate in Southwark, London, have been granted permission, paving the way for a major redevelopment which will provide new homes, new facilities and improve outside areas of the estate.
This includes:
- Provision for 690 new homes
- 345 of these will be council homes, replacing the existing 202 low-quality council homes
- An improved primary school and large areas of publicly accessible green spaces
- Highly efficient buildings with exemplary carbon savings and landscaping
‘Exemplar’ regeneration
In March 2021, existing residents voted in favour of the estate’s comprehensive redevelopment and refurbishment. From family houses and specialist elderly accommodation to a new park and primary school, the project is exemplar of estate regeneration, providing multiple social, environmental and economic benefits through a community-backed scheme.
hgh Consulting was appointed by Southwark Council as planning advisor and successfully steered the project to approval at Southwark’s Planning Committee in July 2022. Since then, the planning permission has been issued and the contract with Southwark’s development partner Linkcity has been signed. hgh Consulting has been instructed to discharge all pre-commencement conditions and obligations for the first phase of development.
Matthew Robinson, Associate Director at hgh Consulting said:
“This is a scheme that has genuinely been designed from the ground up, with residents involved every step of the way, underpinned by a successful residents’ ballot. With a clear mandate for the Estate’s comprehensive improvement, all involved can be proud of the role they’ve played in promoting a highly commendable scheme that will vastly improve the lives of its residents.”
Councillor Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said:
“Throughout the planning process, hgh Consulting has acted with professionalism, helping us as an authority achieve our goal of delivering an excellent redevelopment which will serve the needs of our residents.”
Adam Khan architects, JA Projects and dRMM were the pre-planning architects involved in the scheme.
